Car #2

I have bought another beater and, like the first one, I put it in the shop one day later. Unlike the first one, I did this intentionally and I have since retrieved it in better shape than when it went in!

The new car is a 1996 Pontiac Grand AM. I thought today would be an appropriate day to write about it since I just filled the gas tank for a second time. I got 27.5 mpg on the first tank and those miles included a round trip to Indy on the interstate. Based on driving 500 miles a week this should show a fuel savings of $186/month versus driving my truck! It looks like I may be able to stay in Madison after all.

Survived Regatta!

WHEW! I had a long hot busy weekend, with the emphasis on hot!

Friday

Matt, Gretchen and the kids came into town Friday evening for the parade. We were very fortunate to have been invited to watch with some friends that have a business right on main street. It could've been a long ordeal had it not been for the air conditioning and restrooms so close at hand. I had spent 3 hours earlier that day hanging drywall at the new apartment and I think that sitting on main street was hotter. I had a great time with Carson and Delaney. The parade didn't really have them riveted to their seats and we spent a good part of the time chasing each other around inside.

After the parade we walked along the river. Walked is probably not the right term. I think Matt and Gretchen walked, while me and the kids did a good deal of running climbing and jumping off of stuff. I guess they had a good time. I heard both were sound asleep by the time the got home.

Saturday

The day didn't turn out to be much of a day for boat racing. Debris in the river prevented opening the race course and they didn't have a single boat in the water all day. We did get a lot of visiting done. Tom and Kelly had quite a compound erected at the river's edge and we all spent most of the afternoon drinking , talking and trying to stay out of the sun.

Sundown brought better things. Along with the welcome relief from the heat was the fireworks display. Eunice arrived just before they got started and we watched them from the "compound" with the rest of the family. The group of friends that I hang out with were congregating at Dan Cole's ten located at the other end of the race course. After the fireworks Eunice and I headed down Vaughn Drive. There were a lot of people there. We had a great time seeing everybody and the revelry went well into the night.

Sunday

The races started around 10:00, but with the late night we put in Saturday and the oppressive heat we weren't really in any hurry to get there. We made it to the river about 1:00 and had only missed 2 heats of racing. In between racing heats we made several trips along Vaughn Drive. I went without a shirt all afternoon. I had deduced that with the "compound " at one end and Dan's tent at the other I would have plenty of shade and would get just the right amount of sun on the trips between the two. I was right. I got just the right amount of sun to turn me bright red!

Sunday evening was definitely wind down time. The day's heat had really taken a toll. Our plans for the evening which included dinner and a movie turned into freezer pizza and tv. We were both falling asleep on the couch and were in bed by 10:30. I slept for 8 hours. In a row! Anybody that knows my sleeping patterns should be startled, I know I was.

Monday

Even with the sunburn I had a really good weekend! Today it's backs to the real world. Eunice just left for Brookville, I have two weeks worth of laundry to catch up and tonight I go back to work.

Regatta

Hi all! I realize I've been pretty lax at keeping you up to date. The summer and the year are passing by quickly! I am starting to get excited about my first full blown Regatta in quite a while. I have scheduled some vacation, so I will be attending the races in their entirety.

Since my last update I have been to Indy a few times to help Matt with an expansion to his deck. I was hoping to have some pictures to include, but by waiting for them I have fallen way behind in my communications. I think it turned out really sharp and I promise to get a picture or two on here in the near future.

Shane and I are going to miss out goal of having my new apartment ready before Regatta. It is coming along quite nicely, but with both of us holding down full time job and just getting to work in our spare time, well, you know.

I have also returned to the softball diamond after an extended hiatus. I am really enjoying it, even though it has really magnified how out of shape I really am. My batting has been slow to return, but I have fallen right back into my role as a utility player. So far this season I have played pitcher, first baseman and right fielder. That's right, try to imagine a 50 year old 270 lb right fielder! We are 3-4 right now, however, our last game showed some real signs of improvement.

Good morning all! I spent a nice afternoon with the Dillard side of my family yesterday. Jim(my dad) and Karen were staying at the State Park in Charlestown Indiana. My aunt Faye came by as well as my uncle Alfred and his family.

Part of the afternoon was spent talking about genealogy. I was able to hold my own, even though it's been a while since I've worked with any of it. It was neat to sit and listen to them talk about personal remembrances of their grandparents(my great grandparents). It put a bit of personality to people that were just names and statistics to me otherwise. I felt bad that I have let my genealogy lay dormant for so long.

Today is Carson's birthday. He is officially two, although we celebrated last Saturday in a joint party with Delaney. Her birthday was June 11th, she is three. There were definitely personality themes running through the day. Everything Delaney got was pink, princessy, or both. Carson got "boy stuff" like trains and firefighter gear.

Matt and I have been planning a deck project at his house for a while now. We are supposed to work on it tomorrow. It looks like mother nature may have other ideas for us. Tomorrow's forecast call for rain in the Indy area throughout the day.

My Apologies

I'm sorry I've done so poorly at keeping up with this. It's hard to believe it's been almost two weeks since my last entry. Not much new is going on. I still haven't gotten rid of the car, although the guy where it's at says that he has two or three people interested in buying it, so I'm considering that a done deal. It will reach a conclusion without any further input from me.

I spent the day today working on my new apartment. When I say working on I mean building it! My friend Shane is redoing an apartment on the east side of town. He said that I could have it if I wanted it. I think it is going to look really sharp. I have offered my services on the project in hopes of getting in before Regatta. Today I hung insulation. When Shane got there we ran cable an phone wire. The only thing left to go behind the walls its the duct work for the furnace. Then we can start putting up drywall. I will try to remember to take my camera down the next time I go and get some picture of what we have so far.

"Meemo"rial day

I had a great Memorial Day. It was more of a weekend than a day for me. I went to Indy and saw my grand kids on Saturday. When I got home Saturday night My brother Kelly and his wife Mona were just getting in so I sat up till late talking with them. Sunday brought another brother, Tom, and his kids. Sunday night me and two brothers sat around a bonfire drinking and swapping tales till about 2 am.

By Monday, the day of the big gathering, I was starting to get a little winded. Good thing it wasn't too winded. I had a wonderful day. I bought both of my grand kids fishing poles. So we started trying to teach them how to cast. Carson thought it was pretty neat, but didn't really stick with it too long.

I spent the majority of the afternoon in the lake with my granddaughter Delaney. She is an absolute fish! She started out a little shaky, but once she realized that she wouldn't sink with the life jacket on there was no stopping her. Even with full body shivers and blue lips she swore she wasn't to cold to swim.

I was sure pooped by the time I stopped moving Monday night, but it was one of the best days I've had in a long time!

The Car

I was waiting to post this entry, hoping to have more information. You recall from my last entry that I was driving the newly acquired old car to Brookville. I got to there without a hitch. The car ran well, although there is a bit of hesitation a one spot in the accelerator.

The adventure began on my trip home. I was less than a mile out of Brookville heading home when I ran off the road while reaching for my cellphone which was lying in the passenger seat. I managed to miss a telephone pole, but not a maple tree about six inches in diameter. I hit it at the right side headlight assembly head on. Other than a sore right shoulder from bracing for the impact I am fine. The car is currently at a body shop in Brookville. I have not heard a dollar figure on what repairs will cost. I know that it has a flat tire a busted headlight and possibly a damaged radiator.

The groaner part of the story occurred Friday when I went and paid for the car which I am unable to drive.
